What South Africans really think about EVs

Electric vehicles haven't quite taken over South African roads yet, but there's a definite buzz growing around them. A survey by AutoTrader finds that 74% of consumers are looking at purchasing a hybrid as their next vehicle, while 57% are open to owning an EV. However, concerns about charging infrastructure and higher upfront costs remain barriers to widespread adoption.
The primary motivation for EV adoption is fuel efficiency (60%), followed by environmental benefits (lower emissions, reduced pollution) and consumers desire for hybrids with less than 4L/100km consumption.
Furthermore, consumers expect relatively fast charging times, both at home and at public stations, which significantly influences their purchase decisions.
More details
Hybrid sales are experiencing strong growth (88% year-on-year) due to their fuel efficiency and lower price point compared to EVs.
Though, EV sales are also increasing (78% year-on-year) but from a smaller base. Growth is expected to continue with the introduction of more affordable models offering consumers more choices.
Interestingly, most EV owners (73%) have prior experience with hybrids, suggesting that hybrids serve as a stepping stone to full electrification.
This trend is particularly pronounced among tech-savvy youths, who are more likely to embrace EVs than traditional car buyers.
Our take
The survey couldn't have come at a more opportune moment as South Africa strives to establish itself as the undisputed leader in both ICE vehicles and EVs. The survey results serve as a reassurance of local demand, validating the country's ambitions in the automotive sector.
