Porsche launches all-electric Macan in Egypt
From the newsletter
German luxury automaker Porsche has launched the all-electric Macan luxury compact SUV in Egypt. The cost of the Porsche Macan starts at $92,100, which is a mid-range price for luxury EVs in the country. The most expensive EV in Egypt is the Mercedes-Benz G 580 AMG – EQ, which has a price tag of $237,000.
The Porsche Macan is available in four versions: the Macan, the Macan 4, the 4S, and the Turbo. All models have a 95 kWh battery. The company also launched upgraded models of the 911 and Taycan to the Egyptian market.
The Macan Electric is Porsche's entry into the luxury electric SUV market. Porsche launched the car in Tunisia in January 2025, and in Mauritius and Reunion in December 2024.
More details
The Macan 4 Electric has a range of 514 – 608 km, the Macan 4S Electric can go for between 508 – 603 km on a single charge, while the Macan EV has a range of more than 496 km.
The Porsche Macan joins a growing list of luxury EVs on sale in Egypt. Other brands in the market include the Cadillac Escalade IQ Luxury, BMW i7 xDrive60i M Sport, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Hummer GMC EV 3x.
This week, Chinese electric carmaker Zeekr also launched in Egypt, its first market in Africa. The company launched the Zeekr 001 shooting brake model and the Zeekr X compact SUV at an event in Egypt's capital, Cairo, on February 11, according to an announcement.
The Zeekr 001 has a starting price of $53,350 in Egypt and the Zeekr X starts at $41,400. These prices are however far less than the prices of luxury EVs that are on sale in the country like Porsche and Mercedes Benz’s models.
Egypt’s EVs market is growing steadily, amid an increase in prices of petrol and diesel in the country. As of June 2024, there were 7,213 licensed EVs in Egypt, while in the first quarter of the same year, more than 1,419 EVs were licensed.
The North African country has rolled out several incentives such as lower taxes and subsidies to attract investment in its automotive sector, including manufacturing of electric and hybrid vehicles. South Africa and Morocco are currently the leading automotive giants in Africa.
It is estimated that Egypt has 45% of the components needed to make EVs locally. This has raised the country’s potential to become one of the largest producers and exporters of EVs.
Our take
The availability of multiple versions of the Porsche Macan, along with other luxury EV brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, offers Egyptian consumers a wide range of high-end electric vehicle options. This diversification is likely to attract a broader audience and boost EV adoption in Egypt.
Petroleum products account for 19% of Egypt’s import bill. The launch of new lineups of EVs by global automakers presents a major opportunity for the country to reduce its import bill. Further, Egypt is building major renewable energy projects, which will make electricity cheaper and more accessible.
While the price of an EV is a major consideration for most buyers, it is hardly the main consideration for the very high end of the market. What will differentiate different EV brands in this market segment especially in Africa is performance, aesthetics and design.
