China targets 1M used EV exports in 2-3 years, launching its first inspection point in Shanghai to cut costs, reduce risks, and boost efficiency.
China opened its first used EV inspection point for export in Shanghai last week. This comes as the country aims to capitalise on the growing demand for used vehicles, particularly electric cars, in developing countries. The new inspection point is expected to reduce transportation costs and risks and improve efficiency. |
China wants to significantly increase used car exports in the coming years, with a goal of exporting one million used EVs within two to three years.
The inspection point offers one-stop services for used EV exporters, including vehicle registration and port logistics, and cuts export time by about 10 days.
Our take: Africa is open to used EVs, but few countries have useful regulations... Read more (2 min)
Egypt is set to acquire 180 electric buses for public transportation, funded by a World Bank loan. This initiative is part of a larger effort to promote EVs in the country's public transportation. The project also includes developing Egyptian standards for electric vehicle charging stations compatible with EVs used in the country. |
Egyptian cities of Alexandria, Cairo, and Sharm el-Sheikh were the first adopters of electric buses for public transport. To date, over 130 electric e-buses operate in these cities.
Last week, the Egyptian government launched the El Nasr e-bus assembly unit, which aims to assemble 300 e-buses annually for the Egyptian market, with plans to expand production to 1,500 buses within three years.
Our take: Electrifying public transport is the most effective way to decarbonise the transport sector... Read more (2 min)
A senior executive at Roam, the Kenyan maker of e-bikes, is suggesting that spare overnight grid capacity is so substantial in Kenya that 2.2 million e-bikes could be charged for free. Hans van Toor, responsible for strategy and innovation at Roam, has made extensive calculations to argue his point. They are published on the link below. |
Mr Toor writes, "100% of all motorcycles on the road in Kenya today could charge overnight with excess capacity! While I understand transmission here may be an issue I am happy to hear how I am wrong here."
One challenge is where power would be consumed. If at home, how can a power company distinguish between regular and EV tariffs? If not at home, at what charging stations would 2.2 million bikes park or their batteries charge every night?
We're happy to publish the full report by the Roam executive... Read more (2 min)

Hard to crack local EV potential: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is striving to shift from exporting raw materials to manufacturing EV batteries locally through a $2.7 billion project supported by the UN and the African Export-Import Bank. Although it is forecasted to increase cobalt needs by 20 times and lithium by 40 times by 2040, the initiative faces hurdles, including political instability, corruption and inadequate energy infrastructure. Aligning with the global EV market: South Africa’s automotive sector is poised for transformation as government incentives aim to boost the adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and ensure competitiveness in global markets. The industry faces pressure to decarbonise and align with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) while competing with rising African auto hubs such as Morocco. (MyBroadBand, IOL)
Decarbonising Egypt's transport sector: Egypt’s e-mobility startup, EGIKE, is advancing e-mobility and sustainability through innovative, human-centred approaches. EGIKE has locally manufactured eco-friendly e-bikes, facilitating over 50,000 kilometres of sustainable travel and reducing over 1 million grams of CO2 emissions. Egypt ranks 28th globally on the 2023 Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index. (TheKenyaTimes)
