Most electric motorcycle companies focus on urban markets, with designs unsuited to Africa's terrain

One of Kenya's leading electric motorcycle companies, Roam, yesterday opened its first shop outside Nairobi in Thika. This marks its third shop in Kenya as the company expands its operations. The shop will offer sales, battery swapping, rentals, and after-sales support targeting rural areas around Nairobi metropolitan.

The sales data released last month by Naamsa, South Africa's automotive association, shows that Volvo SA is dominating the EV market. It sold 467 electric vehicles in SA between January and September 2024, securing its position as the top EV seller in the country and outselling competitors despite a smaller model range.

  • The company has three EV models available in South Africa and is planning to launch the EX90 large SUV.

  • Its Volvo EX30 is the best-selling model with 348 units sold, followed by the XC40 with 96 units and the C40 with 23 units.

  • South Africa’s 2025 EV outlook: Chinese automotive giant BYD is set to introduce the plug-in hybrid Shark pickup truck in South Africa in 2025. The pickup truck has a powerful 320 kW output, 650 Nm torque, and a 5.8-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time.   • Firms partner to accelerate EV adoption in Nigeria: Nedcomoaks Group (a real estate company), CIG Motors (an automotive company) and Fidelity Bank (a financial institution) have partnered to bring 2,000 electric vehicles to Nigeria. The initiative includes deploying over 10,000 EV charging points across Nigeria and aligns with a broader national push to reduce reliance on petrol. CIG Motors recently collaborated with Lagos State to supply 5,000 EVs for public transport. (Punchng)
