Africa’s micro-mobility market to hit $29b by 2030
The micro-mobility market in Africa and the Middle East will grow to more than double from $12 billion in 2022 to $29 billion in 2030, says McKinsey, the global consultancy. The electric micro-mobility market includes e-scooters, e-bikes, and other lightweight vehicles mainly for short distances. |
Most cities in Africa are becoming congested due to population growth and rural-to-urban migration. This has worsened traffic gridlock, making it harder to move from one place to another.
McKinsey, the global consultancy, estimates that the global micro-mobility market will reach about $360 billion by 2030, up from about $175 billion in 2022-mainly driven by e-bike sales.
Our take: Micro-mobility makes it easier to navigate congested cities. It represents a shift away from traditional car-centric transportation in favour of more sustainable and efficient modes of mobility… Read more (2 min)
South Africa’s electric vehicle market size will hit $101 million this year, according to the South African government. It marks a sharp growth from a valuation of $84.9 million in 2023. This growth is expected to continue at an annual average growth of 8.73%, which will be driven by the declining prices of EVs. |
The country is investing in the production of new battery technologies through the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), together with one or two universities.
South Africa is aiming to serve as an entry point for the African continent for EV production. The country is already a leading manufacturer of ICE vehicles on the continent.
Our take: South Africa has a GDP per capita of $6,253, which is one of the highest on the continent. With its relatively high-income level and advanced infrastructure, the country is in pole position to lead the EV adoption on the continent… Read more (2 min)
Spiro, Africa’s largest EV manufacturer, has partnered with the US-based e-waste company Ace Green Recycling to recycle end-of-life li-ion batteries. The partnership designates Ace as Spiro’s exclusive global recycling partner. The recycling centres will be established near Spiro’s collection hubs across Africa. |
Ace’s LithiumFirst™ technology, designed to recycle lithium-ion battery materials, including Lithium-ion phosphate (LFP), will be deployed.
Addressing battery recycling not only supports Spiro’s growth but also contributes to broader goals such as decarbonisation, resource efficiency, and economic development in Africa.
Our Take: Africa’s EV market is expanding, but the lack of battery recycling infrastructure presents a significant long-term challenge… Read more (2 min)

John Njogu, CEO of the Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya, has raised concerns that electric vehicles are causing disruptions in the public transport sector, despite the fact that fossil fuel vehicles are likely to remain prevalent on the roads for a considerable time.
