Spiro to build 50,000 capacity motorcycle plant in Uganda

Electric motorcycle manufacturer Spiro is set to build an assembly plant in Uganda. The factory will have a capacity to produce 50,000 motorcycles annually, and will be one of the largest in Africa once completed. Spiro launched in Uganda in July 2024, becoming one of the 11 markets in Africa in which the company operates.

  • African countries charge higher taxes on finished imported electric motorcycles than completely-knocked-down (CKD) kits. To avoid these taxes, companies like Spiro are importing CKD kits and assembling them locally, making their motorcycles cheaper.

  • But Spiro will not be the only assembler in Uganda. Zembo, a startup that has raised significant investment from entities like Toyota Tsusho, does local assembly. Another startup, Gogo Electric, converts ICE motorcycles to electric ones.

  • Our take: While growing, demand for electric motorcycles in Uganda is still low. For Spiro to utilize the full capacity of the proposed factory, export markets such as the DRC, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi will be key… Read more (2 min)

South African off-grid EV charging stations company Charge has pushed back the timeline to build 120 stations by one year due to regulatory challenges. The company had planned to build the stations by September 2025 but has so far done only one, taking roughly a year to build. It has now extended the completion target to 2026.

  • Charge has run into problems getting the necessary approvals from the South African national government and local authorities to set up the off-grid stations. The stations use renewable energy sources, primarily solar, to charge exhausted EV batteries.

  • This case highlights the challenges that investors in Africa’s electric mobility – as well as renewable energy – have to surmount. In this particular case, Charge says there are conflicting regulations surrounding the project, making it costly and time-consuming.

  • Our take: South Africa should harmonise its national and local government policies and regulations to streamline investment in its budding EVs sector… Read more (2 min)

Saddam Hussain, a senior research associate at Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy, says, “Although hybrid seems to be the most viable solution on paper, adoption starts with the feeling of security. A home charging solution will initially encourage the consumers to shift to the technology, and then they will perhaps become open to other solutions like swapping and hybrid models.”
