Egypt to reveal policy for growth of EVs

The Egyptian government will today outline its policy & strategy on supporting the shift towards EVs. Legislators have summoned Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly to the Senate to give the State’s position on 8 key issues essential in supporting e-mobility in Egypt. The legislators say Egypt is lagging in implementing EV policies.

  • Egypt already has numerous policies that were introduced within the last decade to support the growth of its automotive industry, including the local manufacture of EVs and hybrids.

  • Legislators are however raising questions over the slow pace of implementing these policies, which is derailing the country’s transition towards cleaner mobility solutions.

Omoda & Jaecoo, divisions of Chinese automaker Chery Group, are set to launch two hybrid vehicles in South Africa this week.  The Omoda C9 & Jaecoo J7 will debut in a road trip to test the stated more than 1, 000 km combined range with no fuel stops. Chery is also planning to launch the all-electric Omoda E5 in the country.

  • The plug-in hybrid Omoda C9 utilises a petrol engine paired with a powerful 19.4 kWh battery pack. The car has an all-electric range of 150 km and a combined range of 1,100 km.  

  • The J7 has 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and an 18.3 kWh lithium phosphate battery pack. The vehicle has an all-electric range of 90 km and a combined range of 1,200 km.

Kabisa, a Rwandan e-mobility company, has launched its first fast electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Kanombe, a suburb of Kigali. The charging station features three 240 kW direct current (DC) fast chargers. Each charger has two charging points, providing a total of six charging bays as shown in the photo. 

  • Kabisa now operates 15 public charging stations, eight of which are in Kigali, while the rest are distributed across major urban areas. Seven of these stations are located at SP petrol stations.

  • The fast superchargers will reduce EV charging time by 60%. Kabisa achieved this with the support of the Rwanda Green Fund.
