Egypt’s Infinity to set up 800 charging stations in 2025
From the newsletter
Egyptian electric mobility company Infinity EV is aiming to build 800 electric vehicle charging stations in the country in 2025. The company has established 200 stations across 16 governorates, providing more than 700 charging points. The new stations will increase the company’s network to 1,000 by the end of the year.
Infinity, which is the largest EV charging company in Egypt, has begun the search for property owners in target locations willing to partner with it to establish the stations.
All Infinity charging stations are equipped to charge at least 2 electric vehicles simultaneously, while some stations allow charging up to 6 vehicles.
More details
Infinity has grown its charging network rapidly since its establishment in 2018. Having installed 200 stations so far, it translates to an average of nearly 29 stations opened in Egypt each year. Should it achieve its target of 800 new stations in 2025, this pace will jump to an average of 125 stations per year.
Its stations are equipped with double-socket 22 kW AC chargers and fast-charging DC chargers in major stations. The latter provides an output of 50 kW to charge electric cars with ranges of up to 125 km in 30 minutes.
Majority of the charging stations have been established in Cairo, Egypt’s capital. However, the company has also built stations in other major cities like Alexandria, Ismailia, Hurghada, Mansoura, Tanta, 10th of Ramadan City and Aswan.
Infinity’s aggressive expansion is set to further increase competition in Egypt’s highly competitive EV charging infrastructure ecosystem. The industry has several major players, including Sha7en, Elsewedy Electric, Revolta and IKARUS Electric. IKARUS’ network includes mobile stations.
Egypt’s expansion of its charging infrastructure comes at a pivotal time when the number of EVs in the country is growing steadily. A number of global automakers have recently introduced new EV models. This year alone, German automaker Porsche has launched the popular Macan EV in Cairo, followed closely by the launch of Zeekr X by Chinese EV automaker Zeekr.
Demand for EVs in Egypt, which has a population of more than 112 million, is expected to grow in the coming years. In 2025, the projected revenue in the EV market in Egypt is expected to reach $5.3 million and $7.6 million by 2029. This will necessitate more charging stations.
Our take
Majority of Egypt’s EV charging stations are located in its major cities such as Cairo and Alexandria. This is logical, considering that these cities have bigger populations and likely more EVs. However, Infinity and its competitors should also consider smaller towns and rural areas for new stations.
Egypt gets plenty of sunshine all year round. The country therefore has great potential for mobile charging stations that use solar to charge EVs like the ones IKARUS is deploying. Such mobile stations will be vital for individuals in remote regions that have no access to power.
The initial cost of establishing a charging station in Egypt remains high. This has inhibited the pace at which new stations can be built across the country. The Egyptian government should lower taxes on charging equipment and facilitate access to cheaper financing for the same.
